Proud Of You.

For as long as I’ve been in school, I can remember calling my grandma (and grandpa) to tell them about our accomplishments/updates in school. Yesterday, I completed my last assignment due for this semester, definitely the hardest one of my life.

I remember just a couple weeks before my grandma passed and the last time I saw her in person, telling her that I made the Dean’s List for the Fall semester and her so excitedly telling me how genuinely proud of me she was.

My heart aches not being able to call her today and tell her, I don’t know how, but I made it through. I would give anything in the world to hear those words and her voice just one more time. 💔

But I know, deep in my heart, she already knows and she is proud, just like she always was 💕

2020.

I remember writing my end-of-year reflection/recap for 2019 and thinking how hard of year 2019 was and surely, 2020 would be better. Looking back now and laughing, I can’t hardly remember the bad times from last year, and I’m pretty sure they were nothing compared to the lows of this year (ha!).

While I think we can all agree that it really was a weird and different and crumby year, I truly believe there was still a lot of good things that came from this year, too! Here’s some of ours…

The beginning of this year started out great with the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl! 😉 As a life long Kansas City fan, this was such a fun and memorable time for us! Hoping to bring it back this year too! 😉 I also got to see Jason Aldean + Morgan Wallen (my favorites!) in concert! If you ever get the chance, ask Joe about his hair story from this night.

In the Spring, we planted our very first garden! It was so much fun picking out the different fruits + veggies, planting and setting up our flowerpot garden on our patio. We even managed to keep them alive long enough to the point of harvest. Yum!

In May, Joe bought a 2019 Volvo VNL! While there was a little bit of a rut in the road when his work shut down for bit around the same time, it was still a major blessing as his previous truck bit the dust right before and now he’s set up with nice, reliable equipment for many coming years. So thankful for how God’s timing + hard work pays off!

We did tons of fishing this year and even bought our first boat this Summer! It’s nothing fancy, but it’s the perfect fishing boat for us and a way to get us off the shore and onto the water. We loved taking our family for plenty of rides and experiencing lots of new, surrounding lakes together!

July brought many blessings. My sister and I launched our business, Lola Jean and Joe’s sister got engaged!

In the Fall, we were thankful to get to spend time with family and celebrate exciting things together – Joe’s sister’s marriage, my sister’s marriage, Thanksgiving, etc. We ended this year together with our families, enjoying a different but restful holiday.

We’ve come to love the game Sequence, floating down the river and discovering new, small business restaurants around town that we’ve never heard of. We’re so thankful for the ability to see my grandparents through the windows, healthy bodies, and all of this “good” amidst the hardship.

We hope you and your loved ones are doing well and like us, you are able to find some “good” in light of this year. We pray for peace, hope and continued health into the New Year and are excited to see what 2021 has in store!

“All in all, this isn’t the year we wished for but it ended up being a year we will never forget”

Lots of love + prayers,

Davianne + Joe

See ya never, 2019!

2019 was such a hard year for me, and it’s almost surreal to think that it is actually coming to close and the punches might stop. However, as I reflect on all of the brokenness, tears, loss, and hardship, and see how much it definitely outweighed the good, (as cliche as it sounds) I can’t help but look back at the happy times we did get to have this year and remind myself how important it is to find joy in the hardship, to find joy in the little things.

Here’s my reflection on the final year of the 2010 decade…

January: Got to see my very favorite artist, Eric Church! He never gets old.

February: Saw NEEDTOBREATHE for the second time, who we are absolutely obsessed with! This time was extra special as it was an all acoustic show… so beautiful!

March: Moved in together + celebrated my birthday! Joe got me an extra special promise ring and some beautiful diamond earrings, along with some other things. I really don’t deserve him. Our family and friends came over for Famous Dave’s BBQ that evening. Tough times as my grandpa was in and out of the hospital.

April/May: End of April/Beginning of May was such a tragic time for me/us/my family. I can’t even tell you how much it means to me to have Joe by my side through it ALL, holding me while I cried and broke down on the bathroom floor and comforting me when I was terrified of what’s to come. A lot of other people would’ve ran for the woods (and honestly, I wouldn’t have blamed em), but not Joe. It never even crossed his mind.

In May, we also got to take some killer pictures when we looked killer good 😉 at Joe’s cousin’s wedding.

June: June brought a desperately needed week of vacation with my family in Branson. It was extra exciting as this was Joe’s first year tagging along, but also *so* bittersweet, knowing deep down that it would be the last year/vacation we all got to take together. So many memories I hold onto even tighter now, knowing the years to come will never be the same…. Grandma driving the jet ski, Alivia squished in between Uncle Scott and Emily on her very first jet ski ride yelling “bye mommy!” across the lake, the unbelievable magic show, the pouring rain outside the escape rooms, the night (the adults) had a little extra to drink (especially grandma!!) and we all sat around and laughed and cried, sharing old stories together (we even got grandpa + grandma to do a shot of peach Crown whiskey!), and lastly, dancing, playing darts, and singing our hearts out to karaoke at the infamous “Cheeky Monkey Bar” (our cousin’s bar actually!).

July: Joseph’s birthday! And a quick, weekend trip to Colorado for a wedding. My first fully Russian wedding. The couple was an hour late to the service, but the reception was so fancy. Downtown Denver was extraordinary and I even found a restaurant named “Lola”! ❤ The weather was beautiful and the sight of mountains is always good for the soul.

August: Car accident 😦 No injuries and minor damage!

September: Our whole world knocked upside down through my grandparent’s health. One of the hardest months of our lives. Prayed so hard for powerful doctors, extra time, and strength. And you know what? God provided them all.

Celebrated our favorites – David + Sara at their wedding! Such a special moment before the wedding, when we are able to let Michael talk to David via facetime. Technology is really cool, sometimes.

Oh! And Joe and I got to go apple picking for the first time. And we loved it. It was *so* hot, but worth it. We will definitely be going back next year, but will be wearing longer pants for sure because let me tell ya…! Long grass and short socks do not go together. Yeesh.

October: Haha. Some good laughs this month. Livi turned THREE, the boys had some funny masks on Halloween, and of course, the biggest laugh of em all…. ICE CREAM CRUISE – the SRT gave us a heck of a time getting started in the morning. However, we made it up there…. only to have the clutch go out when we were trying to leave and had to come back with a trailer to haul it back. IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. Ah, the memories…. the weather was beautiful tho! I even got a sunburn!

November: was full of lots of family time on both sides, especially as we lost and laid to rest Joe’s cousin, Ilya. The realities of life and death and the full circle it brings hit us again.

December: was such a busy month and honestly, it was so hard to get into the “holiday spirit” this year. However, we did have some special moments. One of my favorites – getting to put up our first tree (and decorations) in our first home. So special.

We also moved! So bittersweet as we, overall, really loved our first apartment and will always cherish the memories we have from it. I hope that if you ever got to check it out or spend time with us there, that you felt loved and accepted and made fun memories of  your own as well. And I hope and pray that our new home can also be a place of love and acceptance and exciting times for everyone who walks through the door. We absolutely love our new place and are very pleased with our move and so thankful that God continues to bless in not only the little things, but the big things too. 🙂

Here’s to 2020 – a new decade and a much needed fresh start.

Davianne

October 8: it’s safe to say that Joe definitely keeps me on my toes… On this Monday night, we ended up in the hospital where Joe had to get stitches on his forehead. He was working under a semi-truck on a brake chamber. The chambers are spring-loaded and typically shoot out away from you, but this one had a broken piece so when Joe let it go to shoot away, it hit the wall of the semi and came back and cut Joe right above his eye. Never a dull moment honestly, but like Michael said – “that’s what happens when you get an old man” 🤣🙃

October 21: A good read I want to remember – Nebraska’s new slogan

Nebraska slogan

Nebraska’s new travel slogan is getting a lot of attention. If you haven’t heard, our latest tourism slogan is “Nebraska…it’s not for everyone”.

Is it stupid? Yes. But here’s the thing…it’s also true.

Nebraska is not for everyone. It’s not a warm beach with waves. It’s not mountains to climb. It’s not exotic food to try. But here’s what Nebraska is..

Nebraska is living in the city but driving by a cornfield on your way to work, always being reminded that agriculture is the backbone of our world.

Nebraska is weekends completely dedicated to football even when your team is 0-6. Because our state bands together for one team.

Nebraska is Grandma’s house as a kiddo – having fun just using what you have, instead of spending money on something fancy and special. Later looking back on life and realizing these memories are your favorite.

Nebraska is meeting people with incredible stories who show you how to live life with simple meaningfulness.

Nebraska is teachers, farmers, mothers, fathers. The best part about Nebraska is the people…the friendliness, the neighbor that takes care of you, the community that knows you.

Nebraska is being reminded to slow down. Watch the sunset. Appreciate the little things. Our kiddos grow up too fast & we keep ourselves too busy – but Nebraska reminds you that Each. Moment. Matters.

Nebraska is the “Good Life” even if that’s not our slogan anymore.

It’s true, Nebraska is not for everyone. If you’re looking for a flashy vacation on the beach or an adventure in the mountains, we’re not your place. Trust us – when we’re looking for those things we take a vacation.

But if you’re looking to relax, refresh, be reminded of what matters most, and find people who will make a place for you in their hearts for the rest of their lives, then maybe you should reconsider Nebraska. We don’t have fancy & flashy, but boy we promise you – we have it good ♥️

September 2018

September 2018

September 1: was a busy day! Joe and I took some pictures at the Sunken Gardens and UNL’s East Campus here in Lincoln. They turned out nice, however, it was ridiculously hot that day, so we didn’t last too long. Then, Saturday night, we went to the Husker’s first football game of the season. Which as many of you know, that only last until kick-off and then got cancelled, soooo that’s that. Joe’s first game and that’s all he gets. 😅

September 3: Labor Day 2018 – spent with my family in the afternoon, celebrating Emily’s birthday and then Joe’s family in the evening, having dinner all together.

September 23: family dinner to celebrate Grandma’s birthday on the 6th.

September 29: As some of you may know, there’s this big festival here in Nebraska called Junkstock that I’ve heard about for years and always wanted to go to, and see what’s it’s all about. It was raining and a little chilly this day, but we stuck it out and Joe, Eva, and I drove up there to Waterloo and checked it out! Afterwards, we grabbed some BBQ at a local restaurant nearby and did a little bit of shopping in Omaha.

June 2018

June 2018

June 1 – 3: Back towards the end of May, Joe got his wisdom teeth removed. The surgery went good, but this Friday morning (June 1), Joe woke up and could hardly breath because his throat was so swollen and was in tremendous pain. As a result, we ended up in the hospital for these three days, from June 1 – 3. Turns out that Joe got a very serious infection in his mouth/throat and back by his tonsils, likely as a result from the wisdom teeth being removed. It wasn’t anything the doctors did, just sometimes happens when the teeth get pulled and those fluids travel around the mouth and unfortunately cause an infection. Thankfully, Joe caught his very early on, otherwise things would’ve been much worse and possibly, resulted in death. (Crazy right?! To die from getting your wisdom teeth, but they HAVE seen it). It was a long 3 days/nights, but we were so thankful to get Joe taken care of and all healed up!

June 14: A good read from this day that I want to remember 💕 ; here it is

June 17: Father’s Day // Holidays that are shared with someone in Heaven are hard. Thankful for a sweet friend sharing this reminder and the everyday peace that comes from knowing we’re not alone. 💛 Happy Father’s Day to my fellow ones with and without, but most importantly to the Man upstairs 💕

June 20 – 25: This year was a little different than normal – unfortunately, I was unable to go to Branson with my family for our annual family vacation, but instead I did get to go to Orlando, Florida for the National Educator’s Rising Competition.
